Custom Modern Metal Staircase for Commercial Space in Utah – Custom-Built

Published On: July 4, 2025By

Some staircases get built. This one got engineered. Bent. Braced. Baby-smooth.

And then — just to keep things spicy — chopped in half, hauled through a hallway, and re-welded post-powder coat like it was no big deal (spoiler: it was).

This Wasn’t Just a Staircase…

It was a modern steel centerpiece with overlapping stair treads that hide their welds so well they might as well have a security clearance.

At Titan Forge in Springville, Utah, we recently completed a custom steel staircase for a commercial shop in Provo. But this wasn’t your average weld-and-run job. This thing had to be beautiful, brutal, and built like a tank — all while fitting through a hallway.

Designed and built by me, Jason at Titan Forge, this commercial-grade masterpiece was fabricated right here in my Springville shop — without a forklift, without a test fit, and without losing my sanity (barely).

Why This Build Was So Darn Interesting

  • I started by sketching it out with the client.
  • Then I used AutoCAD to dial in the rise, run, mid-landing, and support structure.
  • The handrail inspiration? The second-story stairs at the Springville DMV (yes, really).

But here’s the kicker: I had to build the whole thing in sections that could fit through two regular doors and a hallway. No test fitting. No dry runs. Just precision and prayer.

Specs & Stats (Because the Nerds Deserve It)

  • Rise: 7”
  • Run: 11”
  • Mid-landing: 45″ x 82″
  • Structure: 3” x 3” x 3/16” square tubing
  • Bracing: K-braces + vertical supports underneath
  • Welds: Hidden behind overlapping bends for a smooth look
  • Finish: Gloss black powder coat

Tools, Tricks, and Trusted Friends

  • Stair treads: CNC laser cut and bent perfectly by OSHCut in Spanish Fork
  • Landing plate: Cut and bent by Intermountain Steel & Supply in Nephi
  • Everything else: Built in-house — just me, my shop crane, and some hustle

“Oh Crap” Moments

Moment #1: I couldn’t lift the completed mid-landing. Had to install the heat warp-preventing braces on-site.

Moment #2: The stairs didn’t fit through the door with the handrails on. I had to cut them off, bring everything in, then re-weld them after powder coating. Not ideal, but we pulled it off.

The “Heck Yeah” Moment

When it was all installed, the stairs fit so perfectly that the client and GC just stood there in silence. One of them finally said:

“Man… this is art.”

Couldn’t agree more.

Who’s This For?

  • Commercial builders needing stairs that actually pass inspection
  • Homeowners who want a statement piece — not just a way upstairs
  • Architects who dream in lines and demand clean execution

P.S.

Spiral stairs? ADA handrails? Custom metalwork that lasts? If it’s steel, I’ll forge it.

🚨 Oh Crap Moment #3: “The Generator Had Other Plans”

Just when I thought the hard part was over, the generator in the bed of my truck decided it was done riding in the back — and launched itself through my rear window. Full send. Glass everywhere.

Apparently, it wanted to ride shotgun.

So yeah… ouch.

Lesson learned: always double-check your tie-downs when you’re exhausted after a long install. Because when your gear decides to rebel, it doesn’t care if it’s tempered glass or your last nerve.
